Bill Durden – President of the International University Alliance & President Emeritus @ Dickinson College
Brian Whalen – International Education Leadership Fellow at the University at Albany & Former President and CEO of The Forum on Education Abroad
Description:
“On line” classes have become the norm during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, thousands of US students had their education abroad programs suddenly interrupted as they scrambled to return stateside. Recent experiences have provided insight into how we might design future education abroad programs in the near term and for the long haul, providing improved learning along with a distinctive, “poly-dimensional” approach to education abroad that could help admission officers convey the global reach of their campus even in these travel restrictive times.
While no one would claim that a “virtual semester abroad” could replace the experience of living and learning in another country and culture, one might imagine developing a guiding framework for education abroad based on the notion that an online experience creates its own unique culture in which students engage and learn in ways that are not always possible even during the in-person abroad experience.

Planning for the fall semester is underway at most colleges and universities, but few are exactly sure what the fall will look like. It is particularly challenging for institutions with a large percentage or a large number of international students. Under various scenarios — open campuses, partially open campuses, total remote learning — and whether students can get to the US or not, how can we assure that new and returning international students get what they need, that institutions can retain these students and that they can afford to attend either remotely or in person?

The Hudson Global Alliance presents International Student Engagement: Keeping New and Returning Students Connected to Campus. Significant numbers of new international students have indicated their intent to enroll this fall at US prep schools and colleges. With visa availability for those not currently in the US in doubt, these institutions must figure out a way to keep students engaged over the summer and likely during the fall semester. Whether institutions are on line, in person, or a combination of the two, many international students may not be able to travel to the U.S.
Hear what strategies institutions are considering to engage students academically and socially over the summer. What plans must institutions make for the fall if students cannot travel enter the US? We’ll also talk about issues facing returning students who never left the US.
